Mid-Semester Break

I was reading through old posts and my second ever post was about my mid-semester break.  It's funny because in some regards I feel like writing nearly the exact same thing as what I did the first time!

Like back in 2014, I can't really view this break as a relaxing, slow paced break.  My definition of a break and what this mid-semester break are two different things.  The amount of work I need to be doing to keep on track is crazy and it doesn't help when I'm having to google words I've never heard of constantly or when you need to look at building codes but half the school is doing the same thing and you have to wait so then you decide to wait and look for books online and see you've only got a five minute time limit and the book takes ages to load and your five minutes is up before you've even had a chance to look at the book!  *takes a breath*

It's not very relaxing this break let me tell you.

For my studio unit, we've been given a schedule of what to have every week, just so we know what is required and also so we don't fall behind.  I find this both helpful and then not.  Even though we have written down what is needed, what they've written down and what the tutors actually want are two different things.  That happened in my last tutorial but on the whole I was on the right track so sigh of relief from Emma!

I'm still a little terrified of this assignment.  It's huge and we still don't know what we're actually going to have to present for our final submission and that is scary!  All will apparently be revealed after our week eight interim presentations....  Which isn't actually that far away.

I've had to reacquaint myself with ArchiCAD, a computer drawing which I think has a thing against me.  We have a love hate relationship!  For example today, I was cruising along popping columns and that into the plan and I go to check what it would be like in the Layout tab and see whether it can all fit on an A3 piece of paper.  I forgot to click save.  So I went and deleted an external drawing and went to the Layout tab and fiddled around with stuff and then clicked save.  I go back to the drawing tab and see that the external isn't there so press undo, thinking it'll come back.  Nope.  Didn't come back.  Good job Emma.  Three tries and probably a bruised foot later, the external drawing is back in place!

I'm going to be printing out a few copies of the plan out on A3 paper so I can trace and draw all over them tomorrow!  And then I will be starting on a map which will look at urban relationships and then do some 3D diagrams and then I'll look at my assignment sheet and find some more stuff to do!

And I am loving my desk area.  I've got a print directly to the right of me which you would have seen above - make ideas happen.  I just love it!  Did want to have it up on the wall but it ended up just sitting against my computer!  I'm thinking of doing a desk snippets post!  Let me know if you'd like to this! :)

As much as I am getting frustrated that this isn't much of a break, I am enjoying it.  My mind is kept active and I'm always thinking of what I can do for my assignment which is the best!

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx

Not So Subtle With Revlon Siren

I'm not the type of person who likes to be the centre of attention or stand out in the crowd.  But when it comes to nails, I do love a nice subtle shade of orange.  Siren by Relvon to be exact.  Oh Emma you are just too funny, total comedian!  So let's be honest, it's no where near a subtle option for nail polish but I do love it!

Many many years back (I'm talking high school days) I was having a sleepover at my friends house and we were having this little beauty pamper time!  We were doing face masks, I had my first experience of eyeliner (wasn't a fan) and we of course painted our nails.  And the colour my friend chose for me was this orange one and when I went home the first thing I did was show mum my nails.  I was obsessed with the colour and how it looked on my nails!!

So Siren is a juicy orange, it's very bright but not neon.  I've found you can get good coverage with just one coat but if you want a more solid look go for two or even three coats, it's just down to personal preference and also your application skills!  I've used Siren with and without a base coat and I personally find it easier to apply without a base coat.  Putting a top coat on does prevent it from chipping but this lasts really well without a top coat.

I have two coats on in these images :)

It's such a bright, fun colour and even though I'm going into the colder months I am going to rock my Siren nails like it's spring or summer!  The finish is shiny and is the type of colour that is loud but not obnoxiously loud, if that makes sense haha and with my skin tone, I think it goes pretty well together!  Sometimes I'll wear a bright nail colour and I feel it just washes out the colour of my skin but I really like how my hands look when I'm have Siren on!

Have you ever tried this polish or any other similar?  Let me know what you think of it!  :)

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx

How I Relax

Stress is something that I don't appreciate.  Stressing about life, uni, people, food, everything.  Stressing isn't fun.  Since being at uni, I feel my stress levels have gone up a notch.  You want to get good grades, so you put more pressure on yourself to achieve this.  And then I stress about friends and family and relationships and that just build onto the pressure from uni.  And then I get stressed about stuff I see online and I'm like exploding internally!!

But I have found a couple of ways which help me to relax.  Some are probably pretty obvious but they work for me and if one of a few of them work for anyone reading then I'll be happy that I'm able to help!

Listen to music
I put on any song that I love.  Depending on how I'm feeling, if I put on music which is specifically meant to be relaxing I'll end up getting annoyed!  So I'll either play music from off my phone or go to my Tunes playlist on spofity and play something from there.  Also classical music, or just orchestra based music.  I've been playing the clarinet for 13 years so that type of music is pretty close to my heart haha I love the Harry Potter soundtracks and also the Avengers soundtrack.  Majority of the time, if I click on the Avengers soundtrack I'll go straight to the, one titles The Avengers, that's the big tune, the big cheese, my absolute favourite.  Makes me want to swap from clarinet to french horn!!  Also I did a post just the other day which is full of the songs I've been loving and you can check that out here if you'd like!

Have a warm drink
I don't drink coffee to wake me up, personally don't think it really has an effect on me.  But I do however just love to have a coffee to relax.  I's a warm drink, it tastes nice, it smells nice - coffee, hot chocolate, tea - they are all amazing!  Even just warm water and some honey :) a nice warm beverage always hits the spot!

Look at my inspiration board
Earlier on in the year, I created an inspiration board which was to not only inspire me at university but to inspire me in everyday life.  It has images on there ranging from interiors to quotes, flowers to Tom Hiddleston - it it just full of images which I find inspiring.  All of the images also make me happy - if they didn't I wouldn't have pinned them up!  Also, I feel aesthetically my inspiration board is really nice as well...  Basically I'm tooting my own horn for my board, which if you want you can read alllll about it here!

Watch the clouds
This is a recent one, but I have been obsessed with looking at clouds.  Doesn't matter if there are barely in the sky or it's a full on cloudy day and it's like fifty shades of grey clouds up there - I have just found such comfort looking up at the clouds.  I think during one month I'm just going to do a little project where I take photos of the sky and then print all the photos somewhere..  Must remember to write that down!

Go outside
Being outside and getting away from a stressful environment, is always going to help me.  I do this at uni all the time.  If I'm hitting roadblocks with an assignment, I'll save where I'm at, close my laptop, get up and either go for a walk around the building or go outside.  The air is cleaner, it's either going to be cooler or hotter depending on the time of the year but that can be such a welcome change for when I'm stressed!

Walk it out
Now I have to say I don't agree with the 'do exercise to get your anger out' way of thinking - I find that it puts me in a worse mood!  I went to a some exercise on the exercise bike and was just grumbling the entire way through it!  Walking however, I've always found relaxing.  Whether I put music on or a podcast or just listen to the sounds around me, it's always been a way that I can relax!  And I also find walking around when I'm trying to find ideas for assignments a great thing because there is so much around us that can be inspiring and useful!

Smell something pretty
Candles.  Perfume.  Food.  Flowers.  Your good old nose can be quite helpful when you want to relax!  You have to find something that is right for you though.  I remember in high school, I had a maths relief teacher and she saw the entire class was stressed so went around the room wafting a lavender scent all over the place saying "lavender, calms the senses".  Let me tell you, that class turned me off lavender.  And whenever I smell lavender, I definitely do not feel relaxed!  I have a few candles around my room, some perfumes and also some leaves from outsides which I love.

It's so important to find what works for you.  I can't stress that enough.  Some people tell me going for runs help them relax and personally it's highly unlikely that I'll ever willingly go on a run to de-stress and relax.  You have to find something that works for YOU!  And if it's a weird thing, who cares what anyone else thinks about it!  YOU DO YOU!

If you want, write down below what you do when you want to relax :) I'd love to know!

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx

56 Steps & A Personal Desk

For my final year I decided to rent a desk on the top floor of my uni.  A big portion of the top floor is dedicated to students personal work spaces the architects have the majority of the space but the interior students have this little area which we have to guard fiercely or the unused desks will get snatched up! Although one architecture student has just put their names on one of the best desks here which none of the interior girls are happy about!

To get to the top floor is 56 steps.  It's not that much but it's going to be a nice addition for working out!  Also the steps definitely make you more organised!  It sucks when you get up to the top floor and then realise that you need something downstairs so you make your way back down and then realise you've left something upstairs!  Yes that's happened to make where I've had to make multiple trips up and down the stairs to do a simple task!

It sucks when you need to work and there are no desk spaces or when you need a computer and they're all taken!  Well that won't be a problem anymore!  It's great now to know that I have my own personal desk which I can use at anytime that I need!  Myself and the other interior girls are going to be prettying up our part of the upstairs place; plants, fairy lights, corkboards, calendars and reminders to keep us organised and little positive notes around the place to give us all a smile and some motivation.

I personally love working around people.  As much as I love studying at home, wearing comfy clothes and looking like I've just rolled out of bed, there is nothing better than being in an environment where everyone is supportive and the ideas are just bouncing around.  Two years ago, in second semester, I would stay at my best friend Alannah's place for four days of the week and we'd work.  And it worked!  I got so much work done while I was at Alannah's place and I was able to ask for her opinion or help whenever I got stuck and she was able to do the same!  We also had the best 2am chats, something which I absolutely miss :(

I am definitely going to make my desk feel a lot more personal.  Definitely going to bring in a lamp of some type and some little plants to give the space some more personality and make it feel like my own!  And also some butchers paper to put down over my actual desk so whenever I have a spur of the moment idea, I can just jot it down on the paper and then write it again in my journal!  My desk also came with a little cupboard underneath.  Has a look currently on it but if no one comes to claim it, we're probably going to open it and then store some goodies in there.  Tea and hot chocolate and some snacks!  Will definitely be needed when we have late nights and come in to study of a weekend!

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx

Music On Repeat: Volume 4

Haven't done one of these posts in a while so thought it was time to share with you all what tunes I have been reaching for!

I think like a lot of people, I always have music playing.  Or at least some type of noise, be that a YouTube video, the tv playing in the background but I just like for there to be some type of noise around me!  I have an account on Spotify and have 3 playlists that I have created:  one is an exercise playlist which I rarely ever exercise to, I have a chill playlist and then a playlist full of tunes which I just love!  I remember when I first created the tunes playlist I only wanted to have my current favourite tunes of the time and then update and remove songs as I go but yeah that didn't work out and I have 73 songs on that playlist at the moment!

If my technological skills work, I'll hopefully have a gadget thing so you can see my tunes playlist and have a listen and follow if you want but if not I'm still going to list some of the songs which I have on repeat!  Hope you enjoy! *pat on the back to you Emma for getting that playlist in there*

The Cat Empire - Hello
This is such a tune!  The opening trumpet bit is such a classic and I wish I could play trumpet better because I would just go around playing it!  This is one of the first songs I'll play as well in the morning - such a good wake up/get energized song!  I'm terrible with the lyrics but the hello hello bits and my interpretative dance skills make up for it hahaha

Kelly Clarkson - Piece By Piece
Okay who else cried when Kelly performed this live?  I am such an emotional person with some songs and I was a mess when I watched her perform this on American Idol.  She has such an amazing voice and coupled with a piano provides such an incredible song.  Tissues are needed and I probably wouldn't recommend listening to this one in public haha especially if you're like me and are prone to crying over music!

Zara Larsson - Lush Life
So I started listening to this song when I was doing group work and we just had the Top 50 Australian Charts playing constantly and I fell in love with this one!  If you want a song to make models to this is a good one!  Zara also performed Lush Life in the Live Lounge on the BBC and oh my goodness her voice live is amazing - absolutely loved it!

Flume - Never Be Like You
So Flume and myself have had an interesting relationship.  Not the actual guy who is Flume, his music hahaha oh I'm so funny!  I remember listening to one of his songs ages ago and really didn't like it and because of this I never listened to any of his other songs.  Until now haha I am obsessed with Never Be Like You!  If I don't play Hello first, I'll play this one.  And then I'll play it a few times in a row because that's what I do when I love a song!  Marcus Butler also featured this song in one of his videos and that's introduced me to a whole new genre of music which I love!

I am also loving music from Zayn.  He has such an amazing voice and I can't wait to hear his solo album!  It's actually not that far from being released and I so hope people just are patient and don't leak the album!  I also really wish that people would stop creating drama between fandoms and that!  There are enough problems in the world without people arguing who has the best voice or whether one artist is shading another!!  I feel so old sometimes, just be nice people!

What have you been listening to recently?  Got any songs you think I should check out?  Let me know!

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx

What Are Your Plans For The Weekend? | Q&A

I was having a look through Bloglovin' instead of studying (model student) and was reading a post by Leta from The Nerdy Me and decided to have a Q&A of sorts on my blog and answer the questions she had listed!

1.  What is your favourite sweet treat?
Dark chocolate.  100%.  It's the only chocolate I really like if I'm honest!  And a good dark chocolate truffle is just delicious!  When I was little and we'd go to a lolly shop, everyone would expect me (and my older brother) do go for the colourful lollies in the jars up on the wall but we'd always go for the chocolate truffles!  We do love a good chocolate ganache truffle!

2.  What is your dream vacation?
I would love to say everywhere.  But narrowing it down a little, I'd love to travel to all the places of where I come from.  Where my family is from.  I've seen photos, oh so many photos, but now I just really want to experiences the places for myself!  So Poland, Croatia, England, Scotland and also the New York area to see family!  That is the dream!

3.  What are your plans for the weekend?
I have the BEST weekend planned!  It's a long weekend here so no uni for my on Monday but oh my goodness jam packed long weekend.  I'm going to clean, do exercise, procrastinate, study, eat, sleep, clean some more, study again, freak out because I don't understand the assignment, worry because I'm waiting on marks to be released, watch YouTube videos.   So you know, a very relaxing and exciting long weekend!

4.  When was the last time you drove out of town?
Two weekend ago the fam and I went on a little drive to the coast!  Was so nice!  I did bring uni work but didn't end up looking at any of it!  Driving and seeing the Bass Straight brought me right back to my childhood when we'd go up to the coast and it makes me want to move to somewhere closer to the beach!

5.  Who would you like to see in concert?
So many people!  I was lucky enough to see Ed Sheeran last December (post about that here) but I would really love to see Little Mix, Coldplay, Ellie Goulding, Adele, One Direction, Circa Waves, MyFly, Tori Kelly, Troye Sivan!  SO MANY PEOPLE!!!  Little Mix are actually doing a show on my birthday this year...  Only problem is I couldn't get tickets and it's in Melbourne and I'd have to organise flights and hotels and gah one day I'll get there!

6.  What is your song of the week?
This one is tough.  I have two, so it's a tie!  Hymn For The Weekend by Coldplay and also Never Be Like You by Flume!  Never Be Like You is the first song I'll play on my Spotify at the start of the day and I'm just really enjoying that style of music at the moment!  And Coldplay has always been a favourite of mine!  They were incredible at the Super Bowl and also the BRIT Awards!  *adding this in later - Nobody Love by Tori Kelly, THOSE VOCALS!!*

7.  Which TV show universe, past or present, would you love to be a part of?
I have two again....  Castle and Friends.  I adore Castle and honestly would play the person who got murdered.  But I'd want to be killed because I was trying to save someone, not because I've robbed a bank or had some shady past which has come to bite me on the bum!  And Friends because that was my childhood.  I thought I was the coolest girl at school, the day after the baby was named Emma!

8.  What was the last item of clothing you purchased?
I was really hoping I'd have a cool answer for this...  You know a nice dress or something.  But no I bought a pair of sockettes on my first day back at uni.  They are, as sockettes go, so good!  They don't slip down, they're comfy - probably my favourite ones that I've ever bought!

9.  What is the one thing you love the most about blogging?
The people.  I can't say I've met any bloggers in person but "meeting" over the internet then yes!  I've met some amazing people and so I am one day able to hang out with them in real life!

10.  One sentence or phrase you would say to your younger self?
Trust your instinct.  You know when you first meet someone and you just have a feeling about them, whether it's positive or negative..  I'd trust that instinct more often.  And it's not just with meeting people.  If you're in a situation that you're not cool with, get out before anything happens.  Emma, you trust your gut when you're feeling sick so use this gut instinct more please!

Thank you Leta for the lovely questions!  I extremely recommend you all to go and give some love to her blog because it is one of my favourites to read!  And also, feel free to answer one or some of the questions in the comments or do a post about them!  Let me know if you have!

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx

Maximal | Minimal - A Studio Assignment

When I got back to uni this semester I was expecting what I had seen two of my friends go through - go to the studio class and they would say you have an assignment due in one week.  I had geared myself up for this, and was honestly a little disappointed when I saw that the assignment was due in week 3.  Look at me, complaining that we have more time for an assignment!

Looking further into the assignment I saw we had to make two models.  Completely different assignment.  Also, I didn't think I'd have to make any models this year so there was another thing.

I've written two post which include what happened in my first day which you can check out here and here but I have to say as first assignments go, this one was actually quite a lot of fun.  A lot of this comes down to the awesome group I had, but I actually really enjoyed this assignment.  Maximal and Minimal.  Essentially we had our site and we had to make maximal and minimal changes to the building, while taking into account the historic condition, the urban condition and also the programmatic condition.  And we also had to engage with the Burra Charter.  It seemed quite daunting reading through it initially, but once you broke it down, it wasn't too bad.

My group organised times where we'd meet up outside of class time, and we initially used our first session for research.  Getting background information on the site, revisiting the Burra Charter, jotting down ideas and after this first session we went home and studied more and came back the next day ready to share what we had come up with.  We worked so well together in these sessions and when it came to showing our tutor what our ideas were in the next lesson, we were prepared and had some ideas which our tutor loved and also ideas which we were able to expand and develop further.

The weekend before the assignment was due, we went to the apartment of one of the girls and made our models and spent a solid 17+ hours working away on everything that we'd need for the presentation.  We'd already started making components for the models earlier in the week, so for some parts all we needed to do was glue bits together, but for the new additions we were introducing, we had to make and they were bothersome!  I came up with the idea of putting in an amiphitheatre.  Seemed like a great idea, tutor loved it, group loved it.  Cutting out the shape we needed on the plywood was easy peasy compared to trying to glue together the parts for the amphitheatre.  It was really only a couple of pieces of white cardboard, had some curves, glue them together and bam you have a the steps for the amphitheatre.  Oh I wish it was that easy!  I got there in the end, after many juicy words, and managed to get it to all work and look good in the model!

Our maximal model included an amphitheatre, a new addition which 'grew' from out of the original building, and also we removed sections of walls and floor to reveal previous fabrics and stories.

And for our minimal model, we added a new extension on which complemented the original building and introduced some raised platforms which would improve sight lines in the hall, and also retained part of an extension which was added in the 1980's.

When it came to presenting, I was team leader and was nervous!  Even if I'm confident with a design, I'll still get nervous when it comes to presenting.  Our tutors group would be going first, and we were third on the list which I was pretty happy about.  Gave us time to listen to how the first two groups were presenting and if needed fix up anything we needed to in what we were saying.  The place where we were presenting was like a sauna as well so that didn't help the situation!

When it was our turn to present, I nearly dropped the minimal model.  Go Emma.  But apart from that, I think our presentation went really well!  I could feel myself getting nervous as I started talking but I embraced the nerves and used them to my advantage instead of letting them get the better of me!  A previous group, had mentioned an amphitheatre and it didn't go down that well so with the amphitheatre being my idea, I was worried it would ruin everything.  I was just so relieved when they loved it!  I think it all came down to how we explained and justified why it was included in the design!  Ah I was so happy!

Once we finished presenting, we could all relax and listen to the rest of the presentations.  Which went on for a good 4+ hours!  I loved seeing what everyone came up with and it was interesting to see how each group had interpreted the brief.  There were some were I had no clue what they were saying, and not being able to fully see their models didn't help but damn there were some amazing models and ideas!

We had a fire alarm go off while one group was presenting and they seemed happy to get out of presenting for a bit haha going outside to where it was so much cooler was so nice.  It was so stuffy and sticky up in the studio, wasn't ideal!  Also nearly burning your hands with thing coffee cups isn't the best as well!  Nearly dropped my tutor's coffee when I handed it to her!  I did however ask whether me grabbing some a coffee would act as extra credit for my group.....  Sadly it wouldn't but they did have a good laugh!

I'm not at uni, spending so much time here, working on the next assignment we've been given for studio.  It's worth 80% and I am terrified.  We've been given a detailed program of what to bring to each lesson so as long as I break down the assignment, get my head around it and follow the schedule I think I'll be in a good place!  I'll still stress, because I always stress but I'm hoping there won't be too many breakdowns over the semester!

Now I'm going to eat some lunch because I've been waiting for it to be midday for a long time and I'm pretty hungry!

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx
