My Tips & Advice For University/College/School

For many people who live in the Southern Hemisphere, the start of the new school year has just started or they've been back for a little bit and if you live on the other side of this wonderful world, you'll already be back into the swing of school life!

I have finished my school days, hopefully.  Probably, unless I decide to go back to universityBut in 2016 I graduated from university and it was probably one of my greatest achievements to date.  I started university when I was 18 years old and graduated when I was 23 and have grown quite a bit from the whole experience.

So in no particular order, here we go!!

  • Be good at primary school, be good at high school, be good at college and finally be good at university.  Really just makes life so much easier.
  • If you're lucky enough to attend Hogwarts, just prepare yourself honestly.  You just never know with that place!
  • Always remember to document when you're studying because did it really happen if you didn't Instagram/Snapchat it?

Ok enough silliness and onto the serious advice!

Stay focused right from the first day.  Yeah, you've just had a lovely time on holiday and you're probably over school before it's even started!  But coming into the start of a semester with a holiday brain, isn't going to help you sadly (sad face!).  So just try your hardest to switch out of holiday mode as soon as you can!  Granted in my last semester, I found it difficult to get back into the swing of things but the sooner you can

Don't leave assignments to the last minute.  Seriously, it's just not worth it! I'll be honest, I left so many assignments til the last minute.  And my grades would reflect that.  Making a start just as you get the assignment can save you a lot of hassle in the long run!  And the stress of leaving assignments late, far out that is the worst type of stress and something which is completely avoidable!

Go to your lectures/tutorials.  Your lectures may be recorded so you can listen to them later but the amount of times recordings have messed up, the end of lectures being cut off, it's just easier to get up and get yourself to that lecture!  And tutorials, you can't really catch up on tutorials.  Especially if you're having discussions, tutorials are valuable!

Have a calendar/planner/anything to help with organisation!  Whether it is a physical diary or an electronic one, get yourself a diary!  Knowing when your assignments are due, what else is happening and seeing how the semester is traveling, it's really good to be able to visualise this!  I really loved the diary I had last year, super bright and just what I needed!

Ask questions.  The academic staff are there to help you and although it may seem like a silly question, it's better to ask it than not.  You never know, someone may have had the same question and it could clarify a topic for a heap of people!

Failure can be a blessing in disguise.  From personal experience, trust me on this.  At the time it genuinely feels like the worst thing ever and it does but repeating units or assignments allowed me to have a deeper understanding and I think it worked out for the best!  Remember to learn from your mistakes!

Remember to have a break.  Breaks are sosososososoososoosoooooo important.  Spelling is as well but we'll make an exception here!  Studying to achieve your best is really important but taking time to yourself to sleep, rest and regain energy is vital.  Now I know I can't talk because towards the end of semester I hardly sleep, eat or step away from my laptop and we all know how that ended!  Whether you treat yourself to a movie, a relaxing bath or have a few extra hours sleep, you need to have time to rejuvenate!

Back everything up, in multiple places.  I cannot stress this enough!  There got to a point at my university where extensions would be granted if you lost your work.  First time it happens should really be the last, harsh but true.  It's a hard lesson to learn, and it really sucks but when you save your work all over the place you'll be thanking yourself!

Find which study method works for you.  This is going to differ for everyone, so it might take some trial and error.  You might find studying to soft classical music helps or studying in the sun helps!  I will suggest not studying on your bed!  Try to differentiate spaces between a study space and a sleeping space because studying in bed can seem great at first but then can easily turn into getting back under the covers and having a cheeky nap!

Bit of a mini essay hey hahaha oh another tip, probably get ready to read a lot and write many essays!  I knew I'd have to read texts at university but I didn't know to what extent I'd be reading!  History readings, technical manuals, ah good thing I like reading!!

If you're starting a new year off at university, college or high school, I wish you the best of luck!

As crappy as it can seem, your schooling years can provide you with some of the best moments in your life!  Trust me, I know.  I've experienced the best and worst of university and got through it!!  One of the proudest moments of my life!!

What's the best piece of advice you've been given or have given for school?

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx

Some Honest Sentences

I genuinely don't know what the title of this post is going to be.

I also genuinely don't know how this post is going to pan out so this is going to be very interesting.

I am stuck in a rut at the moment, can't think of any other way of putting it.

You always hear of writers block and a while ago I was thinking maybe I have writers block.  So what did I do?  Went and read blog posts on how to work your way through and out of it and I feel like I'm still in square one.  And I don't think I have writers block now.  I have a lot of things I'd love to write about but I've been struggling to put words together.

It sounds like such a weird reason.  I've got the words but they won't come together.

And so from this, I then just down-heartened and don't go anywhere near my blog for days.  I'd received emails saying comments had come in and I normally reply to all my comments pretty swiftly and but I took so long to reply and when I got around to it I just felt so bad about it all.

I didn't touch my laptop for a good while and when I picked it up today not going to lie, I was amazed it still turned on!  I replied to the comments, had a look through my blogging feed and was surprised to see people were still reading my blog while I wasn't here.  And that was something which was really nice to see.

I feel like I've had a shift somewhere and I don't know where that shift has occurred exactly.

Again, something that sounds weird.

Wow life can be interesting sometimes.

I know this is a tiny problem compared to what others in the world are facing, but I just want to be honest.  I still love blogging, it's something I'm so glad I found.  And I can't wait to find a place within the blogging world and my corner of the internet where I'm happy with.

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx

What To Do On Valentine's Day If You Are Single

If you're not in a relationship Valentine's Day can seem like your worst nightmare.  Social media is full of couples expressing their love, everyone is posting what their significant others got them or are treating them too and it can be a not so great day for those who aren't in a relationship.

For me personally, I don't think much of Valentine's Day.  Granted I'm single so you know I don't have major lovey-dovey plans for Valentine's Day as it is!  #singlepringle

I have 14 things you can do on Valentine's Day if you are single and did I pick 14 specifically because Valentine's Day?  No.  That's way too obvious.  My birthday falls on the 14th so that's why I picked it!

Treat yo self/embrace self love - Pop on a face mask, run a bath, pop on YouTube videos and just relax and treat yourself.  It's the day of love so just go ahead and give yourself some love!!  You deserve it!

Hang out with your single pals - Now important that you only hang out with single pals because if you bring along anyone who is in a relationship, you know just brings the vibes down!

Hide out in a pillow fort - This is a really good way of showing how mature you are and how you like to deal with situations.  Great for blocking people out, a truly under appreciated form of design, really cosy, it's just a win all round!

Do Buzzfeed quizzes on when you'll find your perfect one - These are really insightful.  Although I don't think they're accurate all the time as I'm meant to already be married...  BUT always good to know when your soulmate is about to pop into your life.

Cry it out with some comfort food - Just let it out, and then indulge because you don't want your tum to be rumbling.

Crack out some well thought out movies/tv series - You could have a marathon watching your favourite actor/actress but this could go sideways when you get to thinking why said favourite actor hasn't asked you out yet because you're such a catch!  Oh you could watch some horror/zombie movies, nothing screams (literally) Valentine's Day like some zombies...

Wallow in self pity - sometimes it can be hard to have to say "I'm fine, I love the single life" so just embrace the sulkiness that comes with being single!

Let everyone know that you're single - Because some people may not know because their feeds are full of love and romance so really you'll just be doing everyone a huge favour!

Treat it like any other day - It's really only one day of the year when everyone goes all lovey dovey so just treat is as a normal day.  Don't let their love get to you!!

Fall in love with something new - Wanted to try yoga?  Or a new recipe?  Use this day to try something new!

Listen to/create an playlist full of your favourite tunes - If you want to add in some good old "I don't need no love" type tunes, you do that!  Some of my favourite songs are good old ones like these so you can guess what I'll be playing!

Throw kindness around like confetti - I'm sure we've all heard this before, just be kind!  Send a friend a little package, tweet someone, smile at people!  You could throw some kindness confetti around but you'll have a mess to clean up afterwards but really up to you!  Doesn't cost anything to be kind so just spread some of the good stuff!

Think of the money you are saving - Seriously.  You are doing your bank account a favour!

Sleep the day away - Everyone loves sleep.  Day of love.  I think it's a match made in heaven!

Now to all my single pals, your day is now sorted!  Going to be the BEST DAY EVER!

But seriously, if you are single on Valentine's Day, just remember it's not the end of the world.  And there is so much you can do on this day.  Really like any other day it's just another day of the year.  If you're single, don't feel bad or beat yourself up over it.  The day is yours, make it however you please!

Whatever you get up to on the 14th of February, I hope you have a fab day!

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx

January Top Five

Quite a popular post and video is a favourites one and while I love reading and watching them I don't go through that much stuff that can let me do a favourites post.  So I've narrowed it down to five things that I've been loving over the month of January!

Canva - I was introduced to this site through the lovely girls over at HALE in a post where they spoke of their essential blogging tools.  I had never heard of Canva before and checked it out right after I read their post and immediately saved it to my blogging folder on my laptop!  It is incredible!  Really easy to use and there are SO MANY OPTIONS!!  Literally, when I first went through it, I saw you are spoilt for choice!  You can create graphics for blog headers, Pinterest photos, Twitter headers, YouTube thumbnails, blog graphics - seriously, very good resource!  And you can get it on your phone as well, so if you need to create something on there you're not stuck to only using your laptop!

Orient Express - While I love a nail polish which is neutral and doesn't draw attention to my nails, I adore this one!  A gorgeous shimmery red with hints of pink, would have been great for the festive season!  It really compliments my skin tone no matter how tan or pale my hands are and the coverage is incredible!  I only needed one coat and I had a solid finish and this is great for me as somedays I don't have the patience to wait for my nails to dry and then do another coat!  So winner and a definite favourite for me!!

Peking Duk - Out of the 9 tunes I listed in my 9 Current Favourites Tunes post, these guys were featured 3 times!  I am a new fan of theirs and they have just a nice sound which is so easy to listen too!  Stranger is my current favourite of theirs, and they are on my list of people who I'd love to see live!

Iced Coffee - Now iced coffee isn't anything groundbreaking but for the warm summer days we've been having, this is just the best!  I don't make fancy ones like you'd see in cafes but they are delicious nonetheless!  I just pop some coffee in a cup, pour in a bit of warm water and mix it around so the coffee is all dissolved, then fill the majority of the cup up with milk and then top off with some ice cubes - very simple but effective and yummy!

Grand Designs - I've watched this program for years and do hope I can one day meet Kevin McCloud because!  I adore the show and being a person who loves everything design it was great when I was studying at university because I could just watch the show and say I was "looking for inspiration" and kind of get away with it!  Did get a few ideas from Grand Designs, so it did work out well!  As cliche as it sounds, I love seeing people have a dream and for that dream to become a reality, it's just one of the best things to see!  Also I get such home envy and wish I had the money to be able to build my dream home!!

These posts will either appear at the end of the month or somewhere at the start of the month after, depending on how organised I am!

What has been that one thing you can't get enough of during January?

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx

9 Current Favourite Tunes - Music On Repeat: Volume 6

Every year Australia has this thing called the Hottest 100.  It's run by a radio station called Triple J and basically everyone picks their top 10 favourite songs of the year and then it all goes together and you get the Hottest 100!  People take this very seriously and you'll often hear "shoulda been higher" when the songs are announced one by one.

100 is a pretty specific number so I'm going to up that by sharing my 9 current favourite tunes.  Could I have rounded it up to 10?  Probably.  But if we're going for honesty, I have to stick to 9!

In no particular other than how they appear in my Spotify playlist here are my current favourite tunes!

This Town - Cheat Codes Remix by Niall Horan & Cheat Codes
Castle on the Hill by Ed Sheeran
Shape of You by Ed Sheeran
This Girl (Kungs Vs. Cookin' On 3 Burners) by Kungs & Cookin' On 3 Burners
Stranger by Peking Duk & Elliphant
Chameleon by Pnau
Issues by Julia Michaels
Take Me Over by Peking Duk & SAFIA
Say My Name by Peking Duk & Benjamin Joesph

I already love This Town and when I heard this remix it was immediately added to my Tunes playlist.  It's a great song to start the day off and does the original so well!  Now Ed Sheeran.  I knew that new music was coming out and the fact that he had his own snapchat filter for the release of new music was just incredible!  I love both his new tunes and can't wait for the rest of the album!  Now to start saving so I can see him on tour when he comes to Australia!!

This Girl is such a feel good song!  That trumpet tune is so catchy and I always have a little boogie whenever this comes on!  I am a recent new listener to Peking Duk!  I started listening to them around the time of the Hottest 100 and was listening to what other people were digging and when I liked what I heard, I needed to hear more!  I've got two other songs from them and adore them!

Not going to lie, I only googled the lyrics for this song earlier today.  I got the Chameleon part and would happily sing along to that but for a lot of the song I'd just hum along because I didn't know what they were saying...!  I can't keep still when this song is on, you just have to move to it!  Issues was a song that I kept hearing on the radio and fell in love!  It's quite a simple song but so easy to listen too and Julia Michaels is definitely an artist I want to continue listening too!

I'm not lying when I say I listen to these 9 songs on repeat!  I go to my Tunes playlist on Spotify, sctoll to the bottom and press play on This Town and I'm set!

I love discovering new tunes to listen too so if you have any you'd think I'd like let me know down in the comments!

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx
